JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team looks to continue winning streak as it hosts the three-game weekend series against Mississippi Valley State University. The Tigers now 23-11 and 9-3 in conference are chasing the number one spot in the East Division as the land just one game under the defending conference champions Alabama State.
JSU is coming off a 21-0 shutout against in-city rival Tougaloo College and hopes to use the momentum against conference foe MVSU.
The Tigers bring a lot to plate as they prepare to face the Delta Devils. Ten players are batting .300 or better. Lamar Briggs, junior utility player, has played and started in 33 games to maintain a .386 batting average. He has tallied 127 at-bats, 29 runs, and 49 hits (nine double and three triples) for 31 at-bats, 64 total bases, a .504 slugging percentage, and a .456 on base percentage.
The JSU bullpen holds nine pitchers with a 4.00 ERA or better. Jordan Bolden leads the teams in wins with a 5-2 record on 10 appearances with nine starts, 45.2 innings pitched, and 42 strikeouts.
Miguel Yrigoyen has pitched the most innings for the Tigers. Tallying 47.0 innings pitched, the Valencia, Venezuela native has a 4-2 record on the mound with a 2.68 ERA.
Jose Tirado acts as the closer for the Tigers, holding a 1.14 ERA with four saves on 12 total appearances. He has pitched a total of 23.2 innings with 28 strikeouts and batters see a .224 batting average against him.
JSU last faced the Delta Devils earlier in the season. The Tigers took the road series for the three-game sweep defeating MVSU 5-3, 3-2, and 6-0.
Jackson State will hit the diamond on Friday, April 7 to host MVSU in the first game of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Come out and support Tiger baseball.
