JACKSON, Miss. – Jonathan Aponte, senior right-hand pitcher, pitched a complete game in the 9-2 victory over Mississippi Valley in a home series opener Friday evening. The Jackson State baseball team wins six straight game to improve its record to 24-11 and 10-3 in conference play.
Recording his second complete game of the season, Aponte tallied two earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts for his fifth win on the mound.
Senior infielder Sam Campbell led the Tiger offensive effort and added two home runs to his stats this season. Campbell, a native of Yazoo City, went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and five runners batted in. Cornelius Copeland and Bryce Brown also had a great offensive night with two runs and two RBIs and one run and two RBIs, respectively.
Friday’s competition started off slow for the Tigers. Despite its effort, JSU went three innings without a run while allowing two Devil runs, one in the second and another in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers were able to final put four runs on the board to grab a 4-2 lead. Copeland recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice that allowed Lamar Briggs to score and Campbell grabbed three RBIs on his first home run to bring Copeland and Santana home with him.
In the bottom of the fifth, JSU scored an additional five runs to increase its lead and seal the win. Brown and Copeland tallied an RBI each and Campbell grabbed two RBIs on his second home run of the night.
The Tigers closed the game with nine runs, seven hits, and one error while holding MVSU to two runs on eight hits with one error.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 8 when they take on Mississippi Valley State in the second game of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
