JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball 2017 regular season is coming to close. With just four weeks left before the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, the Tigers continue to be one of the highest ranked teams in the conference.

As JSU prepares for the three-game road series versus defending SWAC Champions Alabama State, the Tigers rank eighth in the nation in base on balls, sixth in batting average, 17th in doubles, seventh in hit by pitch, second in hits, first in on base percentage, first in runs, second in sacrifice bunts, second in sacrifice flies, third in scoring, first in stolen bases, second in stolen bases per game, and sixth in triples.

JSU leads the conference in base on balls, batting average, doubles, doubles per game, earned run average, hit by pitch, hits, on base percentage, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies, scoring, shutouts, slugging percentage, stolen bases, stolen bases per game, strikeout-to-walk ratio, strikeouts per nine innings, WHIP, and W/L PCT.

Bryce Brown, Lamar Briggs, CJ Newsome head up the Tiger offense.

Brown, junior outfielder, holds a .394 batting average on 31 games played with 30 starts. He has tallied 99 at-bats, 33 runs, and 39 hits (five doubles and one triple), with 22 RBIs, 46 total bases, a .465 slugging percentage, and a .527 on base percentage. The Walker, La. native ranks 33rd in the nation in batting average, sixth in on base percentage, 54th in runs, 51st in runs per game, 14th in stolen bases, and 22nd in stolen bases per game. In the conference, he ranks third in base on balls, first in batting average, third in hit-by-pitch, first in on base percentage, third in runs, second in runs per game, third in stolen bases, and fifth in stolen bases per game.

Briggs, junior utility player, has played and started in 36 games for a .381 batting average. He has recorded 139 at-bats, 33 runs, and 53 hits (11 doubles and three triples) for 32 RBIs, 70 total bases, a .504 slugging percentage, and a .453 on base percentage. The Charlotte, N.C. native ranks 68th in the nation in batting average, 79th in doubles, sixth in hits, 85th in hits per game, 54th in runs, 62nd in RBIs, 93rd in stolen bases, and 50th in triples. In the conference, he ranks third in batting average, first in doubles, first in hits, second in hits per game, sixth in on base percentage, third in runs, second in RBIs, 13th in stolen bases, and first in total bases. Briggs has been named SWAC Hitter of the Week twice this season and was named College Sports Madness SWAC Player of the Week.

Newsome, sophomore outfielder, has maintained a .369 batting average in 29 games played with 27 starts. He has recorded 103 at-bats, 38 runs, and 38 hits (10 doubles and five triples) with 20 RBIs, 58 total bases, .563 slugging percentage, and a .465 on base percentage. He is perfect in stolen bases with 16 on 16 attempts. The Columbia, Miss. native ranks 79th in on base percentage, 15th in runs, fourth in runs per game, 40th in sacrifice flies, 14th in stolen bases, 13th in stolen bases per game, fourth in triples, and eighth in triples per game. In the SWAC, he ranks sixth in batting average, third in doubles, fourth in on base percentage, first in runs, first in runs per game, first in sacrifice flies, fifth in slugging percentage, third in stolen bases, fourth in stolen bases per game, first in triples, and second in triples per game.

The Jackson State bullpen contains three top ranked starting pitchers.

Jordan Bolden, senior right-hand pitcher, has appeared in 11 games with ten starts for two complete games, 49.2 innings pitched, and a 5-2 record. The Madison, Miss. native has maintained a 3.99 ERA with 45 hits against, 22 earned runs, 23 walks, and 44 strikeouts. Batters see a .234 batting average against him. He ranks 37th in the nation in complete games, first in game started, and 27th in victories. In the SWAC, Bolden ranks fifth in complete games, first in games started, and first in victories.

Jonathan Aponte, senior right-hand pitcher, hold a 2.75 ERA with nine appearances and eighth starts for two complete games and 55.2 innings pitched. He has tallied 50 hits against, 17 earned runs, 21 walks, and 33 strikeouts. Batters see a .234 batting average against him. The Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico native ranks 12th in the nation in complete games, 21st in games started, and 27th in victories. Among conference players, Aponte ranks first in complete games, third in games started, and first in victories.

Miguel Yrigoyen, senior right-hand pitcher, has maintained a 2.80 ERA and a 5-2 record over eight games played and started with one complete game. The Valencia, Venezuela native has pitched 54.2 innings for 53 hits against, 17 earned runs, 17 walks, and 42 strikeouts. Batters see a .249 batting average against him. Yrigoyen ranks 37th in the nation in complete games, 21st in games started, and 27th in victories. In the conference he ranks, fifth in complete games, fourth in ERA, and first in victories.

This week, the Tigers will travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Alabama State in a three-game road series. If JSU takes the series, the Tigers will move to the number one spot in the East Division. The first game is Friday, April 14 at 6 p.m.
