JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team will travel to Lorman, Miss. to face in-state rival Alcorn State University. The Tigers (29-11, 15-3) are looking to continue their 11-game winning streak and hold on to the number one spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division.
JSU enters the three-game road series after sweeping the defending SWAC Champions Alabama State on their home field. The Tigers took the Hornets 4-2, 16-1, and 8-3 to rise in the ranks and become the highest ranked team in the conference and grab several top-ten national rankings.
The Jackson State offense is led by three juniors; Lamar Briggs, Bryce Brown, and Jesus Santana. Briggs, Charlotte, N.C. native, has played and started in 39 games for a .395 batting average, the highest on the team. So far this season, the utility player has recorded 152 at-bats, 35 runs, 60 hits (14 doubles and three triples), and 35 runners batted in for a .526 slugging percentage and a .463 one base percentage.
Brown has maintained the second-best batting average on the team during his 34 games with 33 starts. With a batting average of .376, he has recorded 109 at-bats, 36 runs, 41 hits (five doubles and one triple), and 35 RBIs for a .440 slugging percentage and a .517 on-base percentage.
Santana leads the team in RBIs, tallying 48. The junior infielder has played in 38 games with 36 starts to maintain a .309 batting average. He has also collected 139 at-bats, 32 runs, and 43 hits (10 doubles, one triple, and seven homeruns) for a .547 slugging percentage, and a .387 on base percentage.
On the mound, JSU has three pitchers with six wins and nine with earned run averages less than 4. Jonathan Aponte leads the Tigers on the mound with a 2.49 earned run average and 6-1 record. The senior right-hander has pitched 62.2 innings for 53 hits-against, 27 runs (18 earned), 25 walks, and 38 strikeouts. Batters see a .222 batting average against him.
Alcorn is tied for third in the SWAC East Division with a 9-23 overall record and a 5-10 record in conference play. The Braves enter the weekend series after dropping an 18-1 game at the University of Alabama and taking a three-game series at Mississippi Valley State 2-1.
Wallace Rios Jimenez leads the Braves at the plate with a .366 batting average. Rios Jimenez has played and started in 29 games with 101 at-bats, 17 runs, 37 hits (four doubles), and 14 RBIs for a .406 slugging percentage and a .496 on base percentage.
Jahborus Smith leads Alcorn on the mound with 39.2 innings pitched. Smith holds a 1-5 record on the mound and a 5.45 ERA.
