Baseball Defeats Chicago State 9-7 in Steel Diamond Classic

GARY, Ind. – The Jackson State baseball team defeated Chicago State University 9-7 in the inaugural Steel Diamond Classic  on Tuesday, May 2. The Tigers (33-14-1) held on to the end and mounted a great defense against the Cougars to step away with the non-conference victory.

Jose Tirado, junior pitcher, entered the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the pitching the win for the Tigers. Now 4-0, the San Juan, Puerto Rico native remains undefeated on the mound and has proven himself as the JSU closer. In Tuesday’s competition, Tirado pitched 3.1 innings for one hit, three walks, and three strike outs.

Lamar Briggs, junior utility player, led the Tigers at the plate going 4-for-5  with four RBIs and two runs. Stephan Vidal landed the only home run of the night to aid in the offense with two hits on two at-bats with three runs and two RBIs.

The Tigers will return to the diamond when they host Alabama A&M in the final conference series of the season. The first game is set for Friday, May 5 at 6 p.m. Come out and support Tiger baseball.
