JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team continued its sweep of Alabama A&M with a 10-3 victory over the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, 36-14-1 overall and 20-4 in conference play, complete the weekend as the Southwestern Athletic Conference East Division Champs and number one seating entering the SWAC Championship tournament next week.
Miguel Yrigoyen, senior right-hander, claimed his ninth win on the mound to improve his record to 9-2. The Valencia, Venezuela native pitched 8.0 inning for six hits against, three unearned runs, three walks, and six strikeouts. Yrigoyen now leads the conference in wins this season.
Joshua Santiago entered the game in the ninth inning to relief Yrigoyen. Santiago for 1.0 innings pitched, one hit against, and one strikeout.
Jesus Santana, junior infielder, delivered his second grand slam of the season in the bottom of the fourth to lead the Tigers with four runners batted in. Lamar Briggs went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and two runs to lead JSU in hits and CJ Newsome went 1-for-4 with one RBI and three runs to lead JSU in runs.
With Sunday’s competition being the last home game of the season for the Tigers, the Division of Athletics and the JSU baseball coaching staff honored 10 seniors in their annual senior day. Cornelius Copeland, Jashanno Sweeting, Seberon Mackey, Joshua Santiago, Jonathan Aponte, Sam Campbell, Jesse Anderson, Miguel Yrigoyen, Jordan Bolden, and Francisco Cervantes were all recognized for their contributions to the JSU baseball team.
The Tigers look to continue the success on the road as the travel to Thibodaux, La. for their last road game of the 2017 regular season. JSU will take on Nicholls State University on Wednesday, May 10 at 6 p.m.
