JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team will head to New Orleans, La. to participate in the 2017 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. The Tigers (36-15-1, 20-4) enter the tournament as the number one seed in the East Division after being crowned the 2017 SWAC East Division Champions. JSU will take on Southern of Baton Rouge (No. 4 in the West) in round one of the tournament.
The Tigers have already faced the Jaguar twice this season and are 1-1 against them. JSU fell 13-8 on the on the road but took the home match 5-4.
JSU has had a great regular season, grabbing national attention for their successes. The Tigers lead the nation in stolen bases and stolen bases per game. They rank second in sacrifice bunts, third in on base percentage, sixth in sacrifice flies, seventh in batting average, hit by pitch, and runs, and eighth in scoring. JSU grabbed top fifty rankings in base on balls, doubles, doubles per game, earned runs, hits, shutouts, slugging percentage, triples, and win/loss percentage.
Among other teams in the conference, the Tigers rank first in batting average, doubles, doubles per game, earned run average, hit by pitch, hits, on base percentage, runs, sacrifice bunts, sacrifice flies, scoring, shutouts, slugging percentage, stolen bases, stolen bases per game, strikeout-to-walk ratio, strikeouts per nine innings, triples, triples per game, WHIP, and win/loss percentage.
JSU was rewarded for the effort the season by claiming their sixth division title under head coach Omar Johnson who is in his 11th season. The Tigers will continue to work as the they complete for the SWAC Championship trophy.
