JSU Mourns the loss of former baseball great Shirley Harris III

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State University offers condolences to the family of Dr. Tracy Harris, associate professor in the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education, on the passing of her father, Mr. Shirley Harris III

Mr. Harris began his baseball career at JSU. In 1964, he was drafted by the Houston Astros becoming the first JSU baseball player to turn professional. After spending four years playing Major League Baseball, Harris returned to JSU to complete his degree and graduated in 1968. He would later work at the University as an instructor and coach.

Family and friends’ hour is Friday, July 7, from 6-7:00 p.m. at
Lakeover Memorial Funeral Home (1525 Beasley Road Jackson, MS 39206)

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 8, at 11 a.m. Pearl Street A.M.E. Church (2519 Robinson St. Jackson, MS 39209)

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Shirley and Joyce Harris Athletic and Academic Scholarship Fund to support education students and student baseball athletes at Jackson State University.
