The Jackson State women’s soccer team will open the 2017 season on Sunday, August 13 when the Lady Tigers travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Match play is set for 4:00 p.m.
The Lady Tigers finished last season with a 4-12-1 overall record and a 4-5-1 conference mark. JSU fell 1-0 to Alabama State in the opening round of the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
Arkansas State posted a 6-8-3 overall record in 2016 and a 4-5-1 conference record. The Red Wolves fell 3-0 to Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Conference Championship tournament.
The Lady Tigers are led by Jolene Ceniceros and Jessica Blair. Both players return as JSU’s leading goal scorers. Last season each player finished with three goals to score six points. Ceniceros finished the season with a .500 shot on goal percentage, while Blair had a .643 shot on goal percentage.
A-State will be led by preseason All-Conference goalie Kelsey Ponder. Last season she broke the Arkansas State school record for single season saves with 112. She finished the season ranked 15th in the nation. In the Sun Belt Conference preseason polls the Red Wolves were predicted to finish 10th in league play.
