NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Jackson State women’s bowling team finished the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitation hosted by Tulane University in third place. The three-day tournament concluded on Sunday, Dec. 4 at the AMF All Star Lanes in Kenner, La.
The Lady Tigers beat out Vanderbilt, Valporaiso, Alabama State, University of Alabama – Birmingham, Texas Southern, Louisiana Tech, Southern University, and Grambling State while placing under the host school and Stephen F. Austin to grab top three honors in the 11-team tournament.
JSU ended day one in fifth place with three wins and two loses in Baker matches. The Lady Tigers scored 908 in their first match, 992 in the second, 1,025 in match three, 966 in match four, and 999 in the fifth match for a total of 4,890 points. In the round of Baker matches, JSU defeated UAB, La Tech, and Southern University.
On day two, the Lady Tigers competed in six traditional matches. Marcela Sanchez, junior bowler, finished the day fourth overall with a total of 1,342 points to average 223.67 per game. JSU rose to fourth place with five wins and five losses. As a team, JSU recorded 5,772 points for a score of 10,662 overall. The Lady Tigers averaged 193.9 points per game.
On the final day, JSU defeated Valaparaiso and Tulane to finish the tournament in third place.
Because of her effort during the tournament, Marcela Sanchez was named to the All-Tournament Team to continue her streak.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on January 13 when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark. to participate in the Mid-Winter Invitational hosted by Arkansas State.
