Calvin ‘CJ’ Newsome

CJ Newsome enters his second season as a member of the Jackson State baseball team.
In his freshman effort, Newsome played in 56 games with 55 starts and maintained a .351 batting average. He recorded 211 at-bats, 52 runs, and 74 hits (14 doubles, four triples, and one home run) for 35 RBIs, 99 total bases, and a .469 slugging percentage. At the plate, he was issued 19 walks and 7 hit-by-pitches for a .469 on-base percentage. During the season, he scored 20 steals on 26 attempts and maintained a .954 fielding percentage with 99 putouts and four assists.
On the team, Newsome ranked fourth in batting average, fifth in slugging percentage, fourth in on base percentage, fourth in runs scored, second in hits, third in doubles, second in triples, fifth in total bases, second in stolen bases, fourth in stolen base percentage, third in total base appearances, second in games played, third in games started, fourth in fielding percentage, and sixth in putouts.
In the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Newsome ranked eighth in batting average, eighth in runs scored, third in hits, seventh in doubles, fourth in triples, fifth in total plate appearances, second in at-bats, and fifth in steal attempts.
Because of his effort, Newsome was named a Louisville All-American and received All-SWAC First team honors.
Newsome attended Columbia High School in Columbia, MS. He was a member of the Wildcat football, baseball, and basketball teams. He was name All-State football during his senior and junior year. CJ
Newsome was drafted in 2015 to the Miami Marlins Organization in the 38th round.
Newsome is the child of Calvin Newsome and Teresa Barnes. He has four siblings; Jalon, Jade, Callie, and Hannah. He is the nephew of Steve Newsome who played college basketball at Houston College and professional basketball for the Houston Rockets.
