ATLANTA – Jackson State baseball third baseman Ty Hill and pitcher Erick Gonzalez were named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference All-SWAC team.
Both Hill and Gonzalez earned second-team honors announced Tuesday on the eve of the league baseball tournament beginning Wednesday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Hill (6-1, 210; Sr., Saltillo, Miss.) earns conference honors for a third straight year, having earned 1st-Team All-SWAC, Hitter of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, and Player of the Year honors in 2021, and second-team All-SWAC honors in 2022.
This season he batted .390 (4th in the SWAC), is second in the SWAC and ninth in the nation in on-base percentage (.524), is second in the SWAC in on-base plus slugging% (1.158), and is fifth in the league in slugging% (.634). Hill is tied for sixth in the league in doubles (16), is tied for ninth in hits (67), tied for sixth in triples (four), has a career-high six home runs, and is tied for seventh in RBI (53). Hill had 16 multi-hit games (8 2-hit, 8-3-hit), and 14 multi-RBI games (7 2-RBI, 4 3-RBI, 3 4-RBI).
Gonzalez (5-10, 235; So., Bayamon, P.R.) is the closer on the Tigers' pitching staff and posted a 2-1 record with a 4.24 ERA with a SWAC-high eight saves on the season. Gonzalez struck out 60 hitters in only 46.2 innings pitched, with a more than 3-to-1 strikeouts to walk ratio (60 strikeouts, 19 walks). As the Tigers surged in the second half winning four of five conference series during the second half of league play, Gonzalez saved four wins and preserved a fifth, including back-to-back saves on consecutive days against Florida A&M.
JSU (28-23 overall, 13-17 SWAC) will open Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament play against Grambling (27-24, 22-7) Wednesday at 5 p.m. central time in Atlanta.
