Jackson State and Alcorn State
Â
Capital City Classic, Soul Bowl, Undefeated, Winless or whatever it may be. When Jackson State and Alcorn State meet on the gridiron anything can happen. It's what makes college football special. The two teams will meet on the gridiron for the 82nd time.
Â
Throw the Records Out
Â
Two years ago, Alcorn State had clinched the SWAC East Division and left Mississippi Veterans with a loss.
Terrell Kennedy III scored the game's only touchdown as the Tigers defeated the Braves 7-3. Alcorn then carried the loss to JSU into the SWAC championship game and the Braves lost to Grambling.
Plenty to Play For
Â
The Braves may have clinched the East Division, but not a home field for the SWAC championship game. If the Tigers win on Saturday, Alcorn would be sent packing to either Southern or Grambling.
Â
Jones Officially Introduces Himself to the SWAC
Â
You can call it a coming-out party. True freshman quarterback
Jalon Jones torched Alabama A&M two weeks ago and gave Southern fits last week. He has put the SWAC and college football on notice. At AAMU, Jones accounted for 350 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. He went 13-of-19 for 220 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 130 yards and one touchdown. Versus Southern he went 16-of-30 for 224 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 105 yards and a career-long of 55 yards.
Â
Hampton is the Quarterback of the Defense
Â
Sophomore linebacker
Keonte Hampton continues to show why he's the best defensive player in the conference. The West Point, Miss. native has amassed 102 total tackles, 67 solo tackles and 13.5 tackles for loss and four and a half sacks. He's also forced a fumble.
Â
Junior wide receiver
Warren Newman has turned into a focal point of the Tigers' offense. A threat to score whenever he touches the ball, the New Orleans native has turned in a team-high 36 receptions for 357 yards and five touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder also has three rush attempts for 29 yards and a punt return for a touchdown. Sophomore
DD Bowie continues to improve and leads the team in receiving yards with 512 to go with five touchdowns. Junior
Daniel Crowell is coming into his own and has tallied 327 yards and one touchdown.
Terrell Kennedy III has tallied 293 yards and four touchdowns, while
Ra'Meik Wallace has 252 yards and three touchdowns
Â
Pound the Rock
Â
The Jackson State rushing attack has been moving on all-cylinders. Two weeks ago, at Alabama A&M the Tigers rushed for over 400 yards.
Keshawn Harper rushed for 135 yards and one touchdown, while Jones ran for 174 yards (135 including negative rushing yards) and
Jordan Johnson rushed for 84 yards and one touchdown. Harper also gutted Southern 205 yards on ground.
Â
Scouting Alcorn State
Â
The Braves enter the match-up with the top-ranked defense and top-four offense in the SWAC. They allow an average of 20.6 points per game and have allowed 206 points. The offense produces 31.3 points a game and has scored 41 touchdowns.
Â
With the injury to All-SWAC quarterback Noah Johnson, Felix Harper has filled in nicely. Harper has passed for 2113 yards and 25 touchdowns with just five interceptions. He's also rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
Nikko Duffey is the Braves' leading rusher with 673 yards and six touchdowns, while De'shawn Waller has added 406 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Â
Chris Blair leads Alcorn with 640 receiving yards and five touchdowns. LeCharles Pringle has also recorded 33 grabs for 554 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Â
Soloman Muhammad leads Alcorn with 74 tackles, seven and a half tackles for loss and two sacks. He's also recorded two interceptions and a forced fumble.
