Jackson State at Alabama A&M
Â
The 2019 Jackson State football season is winding down and there are three important regular-season games that remain, beginning Saturday at Alabama A&M in an important SWAC affair.
Â
Defense Continues to Improve
Â
In the midst of its three-game winning streak, Jackson State has squared off against two of the most prolific offenses in the conference and lowered their output. UAPB entered last week's game averaging 34 points and 452.2 yards per game. The Tigers held the Golden Lions to 12 points and 299 yards of total offense.
Â
PVAMU entered the game versus JSU averaging 36.9 points and 514.4 yards per game. The Tigers held the Panthers to 35 points and 420 yards of offense.
Â
Hampton is the Quarterback of the Defense
Â
Sophomore linebacker
Keonte Hampton continues to show why he's the best defensive player in the conference. The West Point, Miss. native has amassed 89 total tackles, 59 solo tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss, all of which lead the SWAC.
Â
Ragin's Career Night
Â
Sophomore
Justin Ragin had his coming out moment last week versus UAPB. Ragin totaled six solo stops, one assisted tackle and four and a half tackles for loss.
Â
Defense Forcing the Turnover
Â
The JSU defense secondary has grabbed four interceptions the past two games. Freshman
Jashon Baker's interception at the end of the second quarter versus PVAMU stopped a pivotal drive and Baker also intercepted UAPB's first pass of the game.
Rashaad Jenkins and CJ Homes each added important fourth quarter interceptions versus UAPB.
Â
Receivers Emerging
Â
Junior wide receiver
Warren Newman has turned into a focal point of the Tigers' offense. A threat to score whenever he touches the ball, the New Orleans native has turned in a team-high 34 receptions for 316 yards and four touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder also has three rush attempts for 29 yards and a punt return for a touchdown. Sophomore
DD Bowie continues to improve and leads the team in receiving yards with 357 to go with a pair of touchdowns. Junior
Daniel Crowell is coming into his own and has tallied 238 yards and one touchdown.
Â
Â
Littles Earns SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week Nod for Second Time
Â
Junior running back
Josh Littles earned the SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week award for the second time. Littles has a habit of making big players in the kickoff return game and last week was no different. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder scored on a 97-yard kickoff return at the end of the third quarter to put the Tigers ahead for good, 21-12.
Â
Scouting Alabama A&M
Â
Alabama A&M sports one of the most productive offenses in the SWAC. The Bulldogs average 33.7 points and 445.9 yards per game.
Â
The trigger-man for the Bulldogs offense is Aqeel Glass. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has passed for 2654 yards and completes 62.69 percent of his passes
Â
On the ground, the Bulldogs will look for Jordan Bentley to carry the load. Bentley has rushed for 972 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Â
Glass has plenty of options to look for at receiver, but his main target is Zabrian Moore, who has accounted for 885 yards and seven touchdowns.
Â
On defense, the Bulldogs will look to Armoni Holloway who has totaled 88 tackles, 48 solo stops and one forced fumble.
