JSU Ranked No. 25 in the FCS Coaches Poll

The Tigers made their debut in AFCA FCS Coaches' Top 25 Poll- Week Six rankings with a No. 25 ranking.

The Tigers Dominated from the Opening Kickoff to the Final Whistle

Senior pass-rush specialist James Houston came through with a strip-sack and rumbled for a 67-yard touchdown down the Bulldogs' sideline and the rout was on. It was JSU's first defensive touchdown of the season. JSU also finished with 10 sacks, which is a program record. AAMU was also held to only eight rushing yards. Houston currently leads the FCS with 7.5 sacks.

Trio Records First Career Touchdowns

Sophomore running back JD Martin, and freshmen wide receivers Trevonte Rucker and Malachi Wideman each scored their first collegiate touchdowns. Martin scored on a 2-yard end-around, Wideman found pay dirt on a 20-yard corner route, and Rucker scored on a 37-yard pass between three AAMU defenders.

Shedeur Sanders Cool, Calm, and Collective

True freshmen quarterback Shedeur Sanders distributed the ball to six different receivers and finished 17-for-24 (70.8 percent) for 249 yards and four touchdowns in the 61-15 win over AAMU. Each touchdown pass went to a different receiver, and he also accounted for a 29-yard touchdown run. Sanders was named the SWAC Newcomer of the Week for his effort.

Offensive Explosion

The offensive explosion was 20 years in the making. The last time JSU scored 60 points or more in a game was when the Tigers routed SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State 66-36 in 2001. The Tigers possessed the ball 10 times and scored a touchdown on eight of its drives. Coach Prime has stressed the importance of running the ball and the offense put it all together at AAMU. Santee Marshall was the Tigers' first 100-yard rusher of the season, and the junior gutted the Bulldogs defense for 123 yards on 12 attempts. Marshall also scored two touchdowns and averaged 10.2 yards per rushing attempt. Martin rushed for 44 yards on eight attempts and Shedeur Sanders ran for 58 yards on six attempts. As a team, JSU averaged 8.8 yards per carry and controlled the line of scrimmage.

Darkside Defense

The vaunted Darkside Defense is allowing an average of 13.2 points and 257.2 yards game, which ranks second in the SWAC. The Tigers held the Bulldogs to their lowest output since 2019, when Grambling State topped AAMU 23-10.
