JACKSON, Miss. – The 2021 Homecoming was titled "Thee Comeback" and the bout between Jackson State and Alabama State lived up to the billing.
The Tigers routed the Hornets 28-7 in front of 53, 578 faithful – which is a JSU homecoming attendance record.
JSU (5-1, 3-0 SWAC) scored first when freshman
Shedeur Sanders found senior
Keith Corbin III at the 10:31 mark in the first quarter. ASU (3-3, 2-2 SWAC) countered with a touchdown in the second quarter and the game was knotted at 7-7 at halftime.
Sanders entered the game completing 84.37 percent of his passes in the third quarter, found freshman
Malachi Wideman from three yards out to extend the lead to 14-7 at 10:29 in the third quarter.
Junior
Santee Marshall, who was awarded a scholarship after the game, scored on a four-yard plunge at the midway point of the third quarter and the Tigers led 21-7.
Sophomore
JD Martin scored on a 21-yard run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Marshall finished with 97 yards rushing on 24 attempts and averaged 4.0 yards per rush.
Corbin III added 113 receiving yards and Wideman came through with 74 receiving yards.
Sanders finished with evening with 201 passing yards and a pair touchdown passes.
As a team, JSU generated 350 yards of total offense.
The JSU defense lived up to its billing as the top defense in the country and held the Hornets to 157 yards of total offense. ASU's run game was held in check with only 40 rushing yards.
Senior
Keonte Hampton finished with a game-high 9 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss. Senior
James Houston was a terror on the edge and added six tackles, 1 sack and 1 forced fumble.
Senior
CJ Holmes added 3 tackles and 2 pass breakups, and
De'Jahn Warren finished with 3 tackles.
JSU returns to action Saturday, October 23 vs. Bethune-Cookman. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
