After a slow start from the Tigers, freshman Cam'ron Silmon-Craig snagged his first interception of the season in the first quarter to get things going for JSU. Bethune-Cookman was able to answer late in the first quarter by getting on the scoreboard first with a touchdown to take the lead 6-0, the extra point attempt was no good. The Wildcats extended their lead to 9-0 after a field goal early in the second quarter. Freshman sensation
Shedeur Sanders and the Tiger offense found their groove in the second quarter and never looked back. The first touchdown of the afternoon came in the second quarter when Sanders found freshman
Malachi Wideman for a 23-yard touchdown. The dynamic duo connected four times. Sanders finished with 309 passing yards and a 72 percent completion percentage. Wideman finished with nine receptions totaling 169 yards and four touchdowns.
Keith Corbin III added 124 yards grabbing seven receptions. Senior
Keonte Hampton led the Tiger defense with a game-high eight tackles including, two tackles for loss, and one sack. Senior

Jackson State totaled 456 yards of total offense and rolled past Mississippi Valley State 43-7. Sophomore quarterback Jalon Jones accounted for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Jones scored his first touchdown at 8:17 in the first quarter with a 19-yard scamper and the Tigers led 7-0 after one-quarter of play. Daylen Baldwin for 30 yards, 38 yards, and 20 yards. JSU capped off the scoring late in the fourth quarter when junior
Jaumonie Crain recorded a 26-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Jones finished 14-for-27 for a career-high 250 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Baldwin added six receptions for a career-high 136 yards and three touchdowns.
Corey Reed, Jr. had his breakout performance and added five receptions for 120 yards.
Tyson Alexander rushed for 71 yards on 15 carries and Jones added 48 yards on the ground.
Alexander Shaw was sensational on defense and the defensive back finished with a game-high 10.5 tackles.
Keonte Hampton added 5.5 stops and reigning FCS National Defensive Player of the Week

Shedeur Sanders Named to Jerry Rice Award Watch List

Shedeur Sanders was named to the watch list for the 2021 Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice Award, which is presented to the national freshman of the year in college football's Division I subdivision. Sanders is amid a breakout season for the Tigers. Through seven games Sanders has passed for 1852 yards, completed 69.9 percent (153-for-219) of his passes and tossed 17 touchdowns to just one interception. The Canton, Texas product averages 264.6 passing yards per game and sports a 165.6 efficiency rating.

The Rice Award, now in its 11th season, is named for the legendary Hall of Fame wide receiver. Past recipients include Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp (Eastern Washington), Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds (Fordham) and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance (North Dakota State).

Following Jackson State's dominating 42-12 win over Bethune-Cookman, the Tigers are ranked No. 16 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 20 in the STATS PERFORM FCS Top 25 Poll. Off to the best start since 2011 (6-1, 4-0 SWAC), JSU received 234 points moved up four spots in the FCS Coaches Poll and totaled 285 points. The Blue and White tallied 285 points in the STATS PERFORM FCS Top 25 poll and moved up four sports. The Tigers are the only SWAC program to be ranked in either poll.
