SWAC East Champs! Tigers Show Poise and Upend Jaguars in Instant Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. – SWAC East Division Champions.
 
Freshman Shedeur Sanders found freshman Malachi Wideman for a 50-yard touchdown with 1:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to secure a 21-17 win over Southern.
 
The Tigers (9-1, 7-0 SWAC) battled back from a 17-7 fourth quarter deficit.
 
Sanders connected with Wideman for a 13-yard score at 5:42 in the fourth quarter to bring it within 17-14. Senior Peytton Pickett added a two-yard touchdown plunge in the second quarter for the Tigers' first score of the game.
 
Senior Keith Corbin finished with a game-high 11 receptions for finish with 92 yards and a long of 31 yards.
 
Sanders passed for 260 yards on 24-for-31 attempts. The Canton, Texas product also showcased his running ability and added 71 yards on the ground.
 
Senior and Preseason All-SWAC First Team linebacker Keonte Hampton finished with a game-high 11 tackles, including six solo stops. Senior Antwan Owens added eight tackles, Aubrey Miller Jr and James Houston each finished with seven stops. Houston came through with a pair of sacks, including a key 10-yard sack with 41 seconds remaining in the game.
 
JSU returns to action Saturday, November 20 versus rival Alcorn State.
 
Notes:
 
-Jackson State will play in the SWAC Championship for the first time since 2013
-Jackson State's first win over Southern since 2013 (Tigers won 19-14 in Baton Rouge)
-Malachi Wideman has 11 touchdown receptions this season and that ties for third all-time (Rico Richardson, TC Taylor, Willie Richardson, Harold Jackson – all played in the NFL)
