MONROE, La. –
Jackson State returns to the Prime-Time stage and travel to Louisiana-Monroe Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN3.
 
Monroe, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi are only one hour and 45 minutes from each other and this is the first match-up between the two programs on the gridiron.
 
Houston, Newman, Sanders earn SWAC Player of the Week Accolades
 
James Houston (SWAC Defensive Player of the Week), Warren Newman SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week), and Shedeur Sanders (SWAC Offensive Player of the Week) took home the conference's weekly awards.
 
Offensive- It was a record-breaking performance for Jackson State freshman quarterback Sanders at the Southern Heritage Classic. The Canton, Texas product completed 30-of-40 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns. Sanders' 30 completions set a new Southern Heritage Classic record as he distributed the ball to a total of nine different JSU receivers.
 
Defensive- Houston led the Jackson State defensive effort on Saturday in the Tigers' win over Tennessee State. The rush specialist totaled 10 tackles to go along with 4.5 sacks for negative 33 yards. Houston also added five total tackles for loss during Jackson State's 38-16 win.
 
Specialist- Newman's 81-yard punt return in the fourth quarter proved to be a key score in Jackson State's 38-16 win over Tennessee State at the Southern Heritage Classic. The punt return was the longest in the history of the Southern Heritage Classic. Newman also tallied a game-high seven receptions for 26 yards.
 
Sanders Named Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week
 
Shedeur Sanders was named the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week. It's the first national award for the Tigers this fall.
 
Looking for first win over FBS program
 
Jackson State is a Blue Blood Football Program that has done almost everything except one thing: beat a FBS program. A win over ULM would add to the Tigers' legacy.
 
Sanders Spreads the Ball
 
The JSU freshman quarterback spread the ball to nine different receivers in the 38-16 win over Tennessee State. Newman, who was dynamite on special teams, recorded a game-high seven receptions for 26 yards and a long of 14. Freshman Trevonte Rucker added five grabs for 72 yards, Keith Corbin snagged two balls for 69 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown. Shane Hooks came down with four receptions for 47 yards and a touchdown, while Josh Lanier added five receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Peytton Pickett, Kyland Richey, Malachi Wideman, and JD Martin each added a reception.
 
Ground and Pound
 
The Tigers established a running game in the win over TSU. Peytton Pickett rushed for a game-high 55 yards on 11 attempts for an efficient 5.0 yards per carry. Picket also rushed for a long if 18 yards.
 
Miller Finds the Ball
 
Through two games senior linebacker and Preseason All-SWAC selection Aubrey Miller, Jr. has proven to be a force. The Memphis native leads the SWAC with 19 tackles and 95 tackles per game.
 
Pressure, Pressure, Pressure
 
James Houston' standout performance versus TSU lifted the senior atop the SWAC in sacks. Houston 4.5 sacks this past Saturday and added from his total versus FAMU for 5.5 sacks. Houston also leads the conference with 6.0 tackles for loss. Antwan Owens ranks ninth in the conference with 3.0 tackles for loss.
 
Offense and Defense Ranked in the Top 5
 
The Jackson State offense and defense each rank in the top five, respectfully in the conference. The Tiger offense is fourth and averages 22.5 points per game and have totaled 49 total points. JSU ranks first in the conference in offensive efficiency. Defense ranks second and allows an average of 11 points per game.
