Former Jackson State football standout and NFL player Lewis Tillman has been elected to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
A Hazelhurst, Miss. native, Tillman played at Jackson State University for legendary coach W.C. Gorden, rushing for over 100 yards in his first college game. In 1987 he was the SWAC Player of the Year and a first team All-Conference selection. He gained 1,474 yards and broke the single-season record of Walter Payton. During his JSU career, he ran for more than 100 yards 19 times and totaled 3,989 career yards.
Tillman was a 4th-round draft choice of the New York Giants, where he was a member of the 1991 Super Bowl Championship team. In his career, Tillman played five seasons with the Giants, and two with the Chicago Bears. He is a member of both the SWAC Hall of Fame and the JSU Sports Hall of Fame.
Tillman, along with Class of 2023 inductees Jeff Herrod, Paul Maholm, John Mangum, Jim Page, Toni Rosetti, Carol Ross, and Patrick Surtain will be formally enshrined next July.
