Football Beats Campbell To Match Best Start Since 1983

JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State University football team battled for four quarters in defeating Campbell 22-14 Saturday in the JSU homecoming game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

A season-high crowd of 51,596 witnessed Jackson State improve to 7-0 overall, matching its best start since 1983.

Running back Sy'Veon Wilkerson rushed 24 times for 116 yards and one touchdown as JSU rushed for 178 yards in the game. Heisman Trophy and Walter Payton Award candidate QB Shedeur Sanders passed for 233 yards and one touchdown in the win.

LB Aubrey Miller Jr. made a game-high 13 tackles with one sack and two tackles for loss as the JSU defense limited Campbell to 247 yards, again keeping an opponent under 250 total yards for the seventh straight game in 2022.

A trio of first-half field goals by Alejandro Mata (22, 25, 26) sandwiched around a Campbell first-quarter TD drive gave Jackson State a 9-7 halftime lead.

Following a failed fourth-down attempt from near midfield, Jackson State scored on the ensuing play. Rolling to his right, Sanders threw back to his left and found a wide-open tight end D.J. Stevens streaking down the left sideline. Stevens hauled in the pass and completed the 48-yard scoring play to extend the JSU lead to 15-7 early in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter following a three-and-out series forced by the JSU defense, the Tigers drove 81 yards in eight plays for their final touchdown. Wilkerson rushed five times for 45 yards on the possession, capped off by his four-yard scoring run for a 22-7 lead with just over three minutes to play.

Jackson State will play its final home game of the regular season next Saturday at 1 p.m. hosting Southern at The Vet.
