Jackson State University football linebacker Aubrey Miller Jr. has been named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the top defensive player in FCS Football.
Â
The Buchanan Award, first presented in 1995 and in its 28th season, is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
Miller made 98 tackles (53 solo) with one sack, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four quarterback hits, five pass breakups, and one touchdown.
Â
Miller recorded eight+ tackles in a game seven times, including four 10+ tackle games. Miller tied a career-high with 19 tackles against Texas Southern (Nov. 5), made 17 tackles against Alabama A&M (Nov. 12), and 11 tackles at Alcorn (Nov. 19).
Â
Miller opened the season with nine tackles and returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown against Florida A&M (Sept. 4). He earned FedEx Ground FCS National Defensive Player Of The Week after recording 13 tackles, one sack, and two tackles for loss in JSU's 22-14 win over Campbell on Oct. 22.
Â
A national media panel will select the Buchanan Award winner, with voting based on the regular season. The recipient will be announced at the FCS National Awards banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas – on the eve of the national championship game.
Jackson State will return to action December 3 in the SWAC Championship Game in Jackson at The Vet, with the opponent TBD.
