Downtown Houston will be a buzz on Saturday night as the Astros can win Major League Baseball's World Series crown with a win over Philadelphia. Just on the east side of Interstate 69 about a half-a-mile away, the defending SWAC Champion Tigers will play before a sold-out crowd at PNC Stadium.

Jackson State improved to 8-0 for the first time in program history after a 35-0 win over Southern, posting JSU's first on-field SWAC shutout since 2014. (JSU beat Alcorn 2-0 via forfeit in Spring 2021). The nation's top-ranked defense limited Southern to 221 yards (136 rushing / 85 passing), forcing two takeaways, recording four sacks, and blocking a field goal. Southern was limited to 3-18 on third-down conversions with eight 3-and-outs possessions (6 punts / blocked FG / TO on downs). LB Aubrey Miller Jr. led the way with nine tackles (five solo), two forced fumbles, and one pass breakup. LB Jeremiah Brown had six tackles, 1.0 sacks, 1.0 tackles for loss, and the key blocked field goal on Southern's first drive, which began at the JSU 27-yard line following a fourth-down stop.

Heisman Trophy and Walter Payton Award candidate QB Shedeur Sanders combined for 246 yards and three touchdowns (18-of-33, 194 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT; eight carries, 52 yards, career-high tying two rushing TDs). His 42-yard scoring run as part of a 22-point second quarter was a career-long rush. Sanders completed passes to nine different receivers in the game

Jackson State is 23-5 in the Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders era, including 19-2 in the last 21 games with 15 consecutive wins over SWAC teams.

Texas Southern has won three consecutive games after a 1-4 start, including two straight in league play. Offensively, TSU averages 25.9 ppg and 333.4 yards per game in total offense (167.6 rushing/165.8 passing) . QB Andrew Body has 1,646 total yards (1,294 passing with 8 TDs / 352 rushing with 4 TDs). Defensively, TSU allows 25.8 ppg / 396.9 total offense (211.8 rushing / 185.1 passing). Texas Southern leads the SWAC with 10 interceptions, returning three for touchdowns.Â
HC Clarence McKinney is in his fourth season at Texas Southern, and has led TSU to the most wins in his tenure, including 2022 wins over Southern and Alcorn.
