Tennis Teams Fall At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jackson State University's winning streaks in women's and men's tennis were halted on Saturday, as the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles handed JSU a 4-1 defeat in women's tennis and a 6-1 defeat in men's tennis.

The JSU Lady Tigers, winners of six straight matches before Saturday, now stand at 11-5, while the men's team now holds a record of 6-6 after seeing its four-game winning streak halted.
 
WOMEN'S MATCH: USM 4, JSU 1
 
Zeina Shaban was the bright spot for the Lady Tigers on Saturday as she handily defeated USM's Shevita Aulana 6-0, 6-1 in singles. In the other completed singles matches, JSU's Paula Arcarons fell to Monique Burton 6-0, 6-1, Tyra-Nicole Whyte fell to Suhana Das 6-4, 6-2, and Natalya Ogunwale dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Maddison Ricardo.
 
In doubles action, JSU's duo of Arcarons/Daniela Ramos upended Alyssa Richter/Ricardo 7-5 with Sherine Salem/Whyte bowing to USM's Sarah Nedik/Ebru Zeynep Yazgan 6-2 and Shaban/Ogunwale falling to Das/Clara Tardivel 6-0.
 
MEN'S MATCH: USM 6, JSU 1
 
The men's singles saw JSU tally a win with Juan Forcada racing past USM's Alexander Gima 6-3, 7-5, and Agustin Agosto putting up a fierce battle before falling in extra sets to USM's Christopher Cahour 6-4, 0-6, 10-12. The other completed singles match saw USM's Dhruv Sunish win 7-5, 6-4 over JSU's Francisco Vargas. USM won two other matches by forfeit against the shorthanded JSU squad.
 
In men's doubles, the duo of Forcada/Agosto defeated USM's Pasawee Reansuwong/Sunish 6-4. Gamo/Vargas fell to USM's Shamirul Shahril/Antoine Audrain 6-1. USM won the #3 doubles match by forfeit.

              The next matches for the JSU Tigers and Lady Tigers will be Saturday, April 2, as both teams travel to Huntsville, Ala. for a Southwestern Athletic Conference battle with Alabama A&M University. The action starts at 9 a.m.
