TIGERS VS. THE TEXAS SOUTHERN
This is the 64th meeting between Jackson State and Texas Southern, with the JSU winning last year's contact 41-14 in Houston at PNC Stadium. Before the meeting in 2021, the two teams had yet to play in football since the 2016 season.
The Tigers have won eight of the last ten meetings in the series against Texas Southern, including the last eight.
The TSU Tigers' last trip to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium came in 2021, a game that Jackson State won 41-21 on Military Application Day, the same as it will be this Saturday.
In the last meeting, Jackson State had 528 yards of total offense, and after the game was tired 21-21 headed into the fourth quarter, the Tigers (JSU) scored 20 unanswered points on their way to a 41-21 win.
TSU won the first seven meetings in the series before Jackson State won 48-26 in 1960.
ARMENTA MAKES HERSTORY
Jackson State kicker Leilana Armenta made HERstory in the game against the University of Arkansas - Pine Bluff when she kicked a PAT in the second quarter and became the first female at an HBCU to score in a football game.
Armenta would make two more PATs in the Tigers' win over UAPB on the road.
LAST WEEK'S RECAP
Jackson State jumped out to an early 13-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 40-14 win over UAPB on the road.
Jacobian Morgan connected with D.J. Stevens on a 70-yard touchdown pass 31 seconds into the game, and he would throw five touchdowns in the win.
History was also made when first-year kicker Leilani Armenta became the first female to score in an HBCU college football game when she made the extra-point kick. She would kick two more PATs for Jackson State to score three points for the Tigers.
JSU finished the game with 475 yards of total offense, which included 373 yards passing by Morgan, with Fabian McCray accounting for 136 yards on seven catches.
COLLAPSE THE POCKET, TAKE THE ROCK
The Jackson State defense continues to take the ball away from others. They had another interception against UAPB last week to bring the total to 14 for the season. The number is good enough to tie all of FCS in interceptions along with Richmond.
The Tigers are now third in the FCS in turnovers gained with 19, while also leading the way in the SWAC. The defense continues the trend of having at least one take-a-way in each game this season.
A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
The Tigers' head coach, T.C. Taylor, found a diamond in the rough in Daylan Wasson, who took classes at Jackson State before deciding to try out for the football team during walk-on tryouts. Coach Taylor needed a kicker, which he found in Wasson.
Wasson was a kicker at Gulf Coast Community College and was 10-of-14 on field goals and 34-of-35 on PATs for 64 points in his time there.
In the game against Alabama State, Wasson made a career-long 46-yard field goal and followed that up with one from 45 yards away. He has accounted for 26 points for the Tigers.
SCOUTING THE TSU TIGERS
Texas Southern comes into the game on a two-game losing streak and a 2-6 record. They are under the direction of Clarence McKinney, who is in his fifth season as head coach and comes from Kevin Sumlin's coaching family. He arrived in Houston in 2018 after being the Associate Head Coach/Running Backs Coach at the University of Arizona.
Offensively, they are led by LaDarius Owens at running back, who has 134 carries for 949 yards, and Jace Wilson, who has thrown for 1020 yards, completed 94 of 169 passes and had just three interceptions on the season.
Jacob Williams leads the defense with 77 tackles and 15.5 tackles for a loss of 61 yards. He has also recorded 7.5 sacks for a 47-yard loss. Williams also has two breakups: a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble that he recovered and returned 95 yards for a touchdown.
