Jackson, Miss. - Jackson State starting quarterback
Jacobian Morgan accounted for all of his team's scores as the Tigers improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) with a 21-19 win over Texas Southern at home on Saturday afternoon.
Morgan first got Jackson State on the board with a seven-yard run that capped an eight-play 45-yard drive in just under 3:15 to take a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter.
Morgan would follow that run up with a short pass right to
Seven McGee for a three-yard touchdown to put Jackson State up 14-0 early in the second quarter.
After Texas Southern scored to make the score 14-7, JSU would add another score right before the half to take a 21-7 lead into the break.
Texas Southern made things interesting in the third quarter when it scored its first touchdown of the game with 3:40 remaining in the period, narrowing JSU's lead to 21-13 after the extra point kick was missed. TSU then scored the game's final touchdown with three seconds left to play; however, JSU's defense denied TSU the two-point conversion, which sealed the game for Jackson State.
Morgan finished the game with 182 yards passing and one touchdown.
Esaias Guthrie led the way for the Tigers' defense, which saw a streak of games with at least one turnover continue with two interceptions. Guthrie finished with 10 tackles.
LaDarius Owens, who finished the night with 106 yards rushing and 133 all-purpose yards, led Texas Southern, which falls to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in SWAC play.
Jackson State will be back in action on November 18 when they host rival Alcorn State in the SWAC Classic, a game that can be seen live on ESPN+ and is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
