Kiplagat places 3rd, leads Tigers at XC SWAC Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fl | The Tigers wrapped up the cross country season at SWAC Championships, with multiple personal bests and a top-three finish.

Sophomore Andrew Kiplagat capped off first season on the trail with a personal-best time of 26:15.8 in the 8k at SWAC Championships. He led the Tigers' efforts to capture a 5th place finish.

Jeremiah Hudson suited up for his final cross country contest of his collegiate career, finishing with a time of 27:07.5 for an 11th place finish. Ber'Narjay Jackson and Fabian Campbell followed behind recording times of 28:35.9 and 28:54.9 respectively. Senior Caleb Crutcher also raced in his final cross country championship, recording a personal-best time of 29:27.1. Dominic Turner rounded off the Tigers runners with a time of 31:21.3.

Amara Hawkins-Quinones led the Lady Tigers in the 5k, recording a time of 20:30.8 for a 17th place finish. Linnet Barrock followed behind, recording a time of 23:06.4. Juniors Xhamani Thompson and Artajia Richardson finished near the same time with respective finishes of 23:24.6 and 23:31.2. Jordan Petty and Derriana Moss also finished with similar times with respective times of 27:30.4 and 27:39.0.

Head coach Mark Thorne

-On Kiplagat's performance:

"Andrew performed exceptionally. I was hoping he could have won, because the one who won was on our squad in the spring and went into the portal. So it was a little rivalry between them, because he and Andrew came to Jackson State as freshmen together…but Andrew ran well. I was very pleased with his performance.

-Thoughts about season as a whole:

"The team showed me grit and that they work hard. We practice almost six days a week. We put the work in. They showed that the hard work really paid off the way that the season progressed. Everyone ran a season-best or personal-best. The work and the practices really paid off and they did what they were supposed to…Even though the competition was pretty stiff, but I'm pleased with what I saw."
