JSU wins both doubles tournaments at SWAC Fall Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Tigers secured wins in both doubles championship rounds to headline several good performances for them in the SWAC Fall Tournament. 
 
The men's duo included last year's Ching Chang Chiu and Maas Schotanus ran the table, defeating three teams in the tournament. They defeated Southern 8-3 in the quarterfinals and went on to beat Alabama State 9-7 in the semifinals. The duo matched up against Alcorn State's team of Nikola Kajic and Devin Leon 7-6, 7-6, and sealed the deal to close out the championship match. 
 
In singles competition on the men's side, Jhoan Vaquero came up short against the eventual winner from Alabama State, Alexandre Verlaguet, 6-3, 6-0. 
 
The women's doubles team featuring the reigning SWAC Player of the year, Zeina Shaaban and Kayleigh Didderiens defeated three teams on their way to claiming the championship. They defeated Bethune-Cookman in an 8-3 contest and went on to defeat Grambling State 8-6 in the quarterfinals. The Shaaban and Didderiens duo went up against the Alabama State Hornet team of Melis Mekic and Diana Cracium, winning their match 7-5, 6-1.
 
Shaaban led the charge for the Lady Tigers in singles action advancing all the way to the championship match. In the first round, she defeated Prairie View's Daniela Garcia 6-2, 6-2. Her quarterfinal matchup against Sofia Sotelo-Raya of Alabama A&M ended in a 6-3, 6-4 victory. She won her semifinals match against Southern's Jessica Hess 6-3, 6-4. Florida A&M's Sara Rakim would be the only one to best Shaaban as she lost 3-6, 3-6. 
 
Paula Corbalan also competed in singles action for the Lady Tigers winning her first-round match against Grambling's Claire Machisa 6-1, 6-1, advancing to the quarterfinals. She would fall to Prairie View's Andrea Pascal- Blanca in the next round 2-6, 4-6.

"We had a great weekend. We qualified for three finals on four draws and we won two. I believe we are working extremely hard and it showed this weekend. I'm very proud of all the effort they put on the court. This is just part of the process but we are definitely happy with the results"
 
Up Next
After winning their respective tournaments, both doubles teams will advance to the ITA Conference Masters in Rome, GA. The event will take place on November 7-10.

Jackson State's tennis teams return officially to the courts in the new year, with the men's team facing Mississippi College on Feb. 7 and the women's team hosting Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 1.
