Jackson State to host Southern on Saturday night

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State returns to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for the second consecutive weekend, hosting rival Southern in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 14 on ESPN+.

The game kicks at 6 p.m., and it will be the last home game for the Tigers until October when they return home to face Florida A&M on Oct. 19.

Jackson State (1-1) and Southern (1-1) are both coming off victories last weekend over SIAC foes Lane and Savannah State, games that both teams dominated on both sides of the ball. The Tigers enter the weekend after a 434-yard performance on offense that saw quarterbacks Jacobian Morgan and Cam'Ron McCoy combine for six touchdowns, with McCoy hitting the century mark running the ball with 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Jackson State averages 360 yards on offense through the first two games including 121 yards on the ground. They have also targeted 12 receivers in two games with passes completed to 10 of those, including six each to Travis Terrell Jr. and Marvin Landy.

Meanwhile, on defense, the Tigers are allowing just 221 yards per game including 81 through the air in two games. They have forced two turnovers in the two games, a pair of interceptions last week from Shamar Hawkins and Esaias Guthrie. A pair of linebackers, Reid Pulliam and Ashton Taylor lead the team in tackles with 11 and 10 respectively.
