Jackson State Notes
  • Jackson State offensive line coach/running game coordinator Manny Ramirez returns to the state of Texas, and for the school he coached for last season, facing Texas Southern. Ramirez wasted no time in setting the tone for the line as the unit was one of the most improved areas on the team after his first year. He played a huge part in the ascension of lineman Drake Centers, who became the first TSU lineman to earn All-SWAC honors since 2010. Centers helped anchor an offensive line which helped TSU finish with 4,293 yards of offense.
  • Jackson State is still searching for its first points in the fourth quarter this season, although they have outscored the opponents in every other quarter.
  • Jackson State held Southern to just 29 rushing yards in their last game, after holding Lane to just 75 yards in the previous game. Through four games, teams are averaging just 103.0 yards per game. They have allowed two teams to rush for 100-plus yards, both losses and both on the road - ULM and Grambling State.
  • Jackson State has played seven times on this date in history, and is 5-2 all-time. They have wins over Mississippi Vocational (18-13) in 1963, MVSU (25-6) in 1974, MVSU (33-13) in 1996, MVSU (36-12) in 2012, and Southern (19-14) in 2013.
  • The Tigers have played 144 games against teams from the state of Texas since 1956. They have faced seven different teams over that span and have a 108-32-4 record. They have played games against Bishop (7-1), Prairie View A&M (41-15-2), TCU (0-1), Texas College (3-0), Texas Lutheran (2-0), Texas Southern (45-14-1), and Wiley (10-1-1).
  • Jackson State punter Matt Noll was one of a record number of 203 semifinalists named for the 2024 William V. Campbell Trophy®, announced by the National Football Foundation on Wednesday. Noll was one of two student-athletes from an HBCU and the lone student-athlete from the SWAC, joining Terrance Hollon from Howard. The new highwater mark eclipses the 201 nominees in 2023. The impressive list of candidates, from all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, boasts an impressive 3.63 average GPA, with more than half of the semifinalists having already earned their bachelor's degrees.
