Game Eight Preview: Jackson State continues road swing, this time in Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Jackson State continues its three-game road swing in conference play, heading to Tallahassee (Fla.) and Bragg Memorial Stadium to face Florida A&M on Saturday night.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN+ with two teams battling for the SWAC East Division championship.

OPENING KICK

  • Jackson State and Florida A&M have met 23 times with Jackson State holding a 13-8-2 advantage including a 6-2-1 advantage at home.
  • Ahmad Miller turned in the second-best rushing performance of the season against Hampton in the season opener with 180 yards against Hampton. He was even with Joshua Dye of Southern Utah, while Eastern Illinois quarterback Cole LaCrue rushed for nation's best 193 yards. He followed that up with another 100-yard rushing performance against Southern in his last outing - rushing for 101 - after seeing limited action against Tuskegee.
  • Nate Rembert recorded his second 100-yard receiving day of the season with a 126-yard performance against Grambling State that included a 62-yard touchdown reception.
  • Jackson State was named the FCS HBCU National Team of the Week after its win over Southern  after racking up over 500 yards of total offense and outscoring Southern 28-0 over the final 30:05 of the game.
  • The Tigers had three receivers rack up 90-plus yards in the win over Southern led by Nate Rembert with 102 yards on five receptions. He was joined by Jameel Gardner Jr. with seven receptions for 96 yards and Ja'Naylon Dupree with 93 yards on five receptions. Both Rembert and Dupree had touchdown receptions in the win.
  • Jackson State had its streak of 13 consecutive wins against SWAC opponents and 14 consecutive games against FCS competition snapped in the loss to Grambling State, the only FCS team to have beat Jackson State in the last two years.
  • Since the fall of 2021, Jackson State has won 56 of 67 games overall and are 32-4 in regular season games against conference competition. The Tigers have won three Southwestern Athletic Conference [SWAC] championships, played in three Celebrration Bowls, and won the 2024 HBCU national championship.
  • The Tigers have had three different players rush for over 100 yards this season [Miller, JaCobian Morgan and Travis Terrell Jr.]. The Tigers have rushed for over 200 yards in four games this season, all wins, while in the three games they have failed to reach that mark they are 1-2 on the season.
  • Reid Pulliam had a career day against Grambling State, finshing with a career-high 10 tackles [seven solo], and ended up with a pair of tackles for loss and a sack.

JACKSON STATE AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION
Jackson State is currently second in the nation in rushing at 256.9 yards per game, trailing only Delaware State this season. The Tigers have rushed for 200-plus yards in four of the seven games this season, including 388 against Alabama A&M and 305 against Hampton. The only two games the Tigers haven't reached that mark came against Southern, Grambling State and Southern Miss. Miller is among the nation's best through the first seven games of the season, ranking among the nation's best in several categories and needs to average 115 yards per game over the final five regular season games to hit 1,000 yards for the year. The redshirt sophomore is sixth in the nation in yards per carry [7.00], 31st in rushing yards per game [77.0], and 49th in rushing yards [539].

FORMER QUARTERBACK DISRUPTING OFFENSES AS AN EDGE RUSHER
Quincy Ivory
, a former quarterback who started his career at Mississippi Valley State, had a career day for Jackson State in his debut in the Hope Labor Day Classic. Ivory earned Defensive MVP honors in the game after recording eight tackles, including four solo from his defensive end position. But that wasn't the biggest stat line as he finished with 3.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks. Not to mention, he recovered a fumble and forced a fumble in the win. He did it again against Southern Miss in the first road game of the season with 10 total tackles including a pair of solo, and he also added another sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss. He also added 10 total tackles in a win over Alabama A&M. The graduate student did it again with 12 tackles in a big win over Alabama State in the last game for the Tigers including eight solo stops along the way. He ranks among the nation's best through the first seven games of the season. He is ranked 16th in the nation in sacks, and third in the SWAC, with 0.79 per game. He also ranks seventh in tackles for loss and second in the SWAC, while also ranking 78th overall in total tackles.

T.C. TAYLOR SELECTED TO JSU SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Jackson State head coach and former Tiger star T.C. Taylor will be named to the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame on November 14, the day before the Bethune-Cookman game in Jackson. As a senior in 2001, Taylor broke the single-season school record for receptions, finishing with 84 for 1,234 yards and 11 scores. He was named third-team All-American by The Sports Network and first-team Black college All-American by the Sheridan Broadcasting Network He additionally was the runner-up for the Conerly Trophy, given to the best player in Mississippi [with Eli Manning winning the award]. Although Taylor only appeared in a total of 19 games at wide receiver in his career at JSU, he finished with 1,793 receiving yards and over 175 catches.
