JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State used a trio of running backs going over the century mark and a stingy defense to defeat Bethune-Cookman 28-13 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Ahmad Miller led all rushers with 118 yards on 22 carries, while Donerio Davenport added 106 yards on 11 carries with a touchdown and Travis Terrell Jr. hitting the mark for the second time this season with 103 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. The Tigers ended the day with 360 yards rushing, while the defense allowed just 75 yards on the ground on 25 carries.Â
Jared Lockhart finished the game 12-of-21 for 160 yards and a touchdown, connecting with six different receivers led by Jameel Gardner Jr. with 98 yards on three receptions and Nate Rembert 28 yards on three carries. Defensively, the Tigers had 22 different players record a tackle led by Frankie Dunn Jr. with five tackles.
Jackson State (8-2, 6-1 SWAC) needed just two plays to get on the board when Lockhart connected with Gardner for an 83-yard touchdown pass before Bethune-Cookman answered on the next play with a kickoff return for a touchdown. The two teams traded points in the second with Terrell scoring on a 25-yard run to give Jackson State a 14-10 lead. After a Bethune-Cookman field goal in the third to trim the deficit to 14-13, Davenport pushed the lead to 21-13 with a six-yard run before B.J. Washington put the game away with an 82-yard interception return for a touchdown with just 13 seconds remaining.
