Game Nine Preview: Jackson State concludes road swing at Mississippi Valley State

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Jackson State concludes its three-game road swing in three different states on Saturday when it faces Mississippi Valley State at Rice-Totten Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. on SWAC TV.

OPENING KICK

  • Jackson State and Jackson State have met 62 times in school history dating back to the late 50s, including 21 times in Itta Bena. During that time, Jackson State is 21-0.
  • Ahmad Miller was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week after he finished the night with 165 yards on 19 carries, just 15 yards shy of his career-high set in the season opener against Hampton. He finished with a long run of 64 yards before finishing the drive off with a one-yard run at the end of the first half. Miller helped Jackson State post a season-high 392 yards rushing on the night in the win to keep the Tigers atop the SWAC East Division.
  • Nate Rembert and Quincy Ivory return to Mississippi Valley State for the first time since their transfers. Rembert transferred following the season last year, while Ivory started his career as a quarterback in Itta Bena.
  • Jackson State had its streak of 13 consecutive wins against SWAC opponents and 14 consecutive games against FCS competition snapped in the loss to Grambling State, the only FCS team to have beat Jackson State in the last two years.
  • Since the fall of 2021, Jackson State has won 57 of 68 games overall and are 33-4 in regular season games against conference competition. The Tigers have won three Southwestern Athletic Conference [SWAC] championships, played in three Celebrration Bowls, and won the 2024 HBCU national championship.
  • The Tigers have had three different players rush for over 100 yards this season [Miller, Morgan, Donerio Davenport and Travis Terrell Jr.]. The Tigers have rushed for over 200 yards in five games this season, all wins, while in the three games they have failed to reach that mark they are 1-2 on the season.
  • Reid Pulliam had a career day against Grambling State, finshing with a career-high 10 tackles [seven solo], and ended up with a pair of tackles for loss and a sack. His fellow linebacker, Ashton Taylor, had a monster night against Florida A&M with five tackles including three tackles for loss.

NEARLY 400 YARDS RUSHING ON SATURDAY AGAINST FLORIDA A&M
Jackson State rushed for early 400 yards as Ahmad Miller and Donerio Davenport combined for 277 of the team's 392 rushing yards against Florida A&M, with Miller leading the way with 165 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Davenport finished with 112 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown, and Nate Rembert picked up a rushing touchdown on a 40-yard jet sweep. Jared Lockhart finished with 37 yards rushing and Travis Terrell Jr. picked up 29 yards and a touchdown.

SALLIS NAMED AENEAS WILLIAMS AWARD SEMIFINALIST
The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) released the fourth annual Aeneas WIlliams Award semifinalist that includes safety Kam Sallis. The redshirt sophomore has 29 total tackles including 12 solo. He also has a pass breakup and an interception that came against Southern at the goalline. The semifinalists include Tomondrey Braxton (North Carolina Central), Aaron Harris (North Carolina A&T), Johnny Harris III (Bethune-Cookman), Markel Linzer (Grambling State), Jadarrius Perkins (Delaware State), Tyrell Raby (Grambling State), Sallis (Jackson State), Jarod Washington (South Carolina State), Zuri Watson (Howard), Gabe White (Bethune-Cookman), and Edric Whitley (Texas Southern).

T.C. TAYLOR SELECTED TO JSU SPORTS HALL OF FAME
Jackson State head coach and former Tiger star T.C. Taylor will be named to the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame on November 14, the day before the Bethune-Cookman game in Jackson. As a senior in 2001, Taylor broke the single-season school record for receptions, finishing with 84 for 1,234 yards and 11 scores. He was named third-team All-American by The Sports Network and first-team Black college All-American by the Sheridan Broadcasting Network He additionally was the runner-up for the Conerly Trophy, given to the best player in Mississippi [with Eli Manning winning the award]. Although Taylor only appeared in a total of 19 games at wide receiver in his career at JSU, he finished with 1,793 receiving yards and over 175 catches.
