Jontrell Walker dropped a team-high 15 points as Pepperdine narrowly defeated Jackson State 69-66 Saturday evening at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
The Tigers (1-8, 0-0 SWAC) shot the ball efficiently and connected on 44.1 percent (26-of-59) of their shots from the field. The Waves (5-4, 0-0 WCC) shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the floor.
Overall, the JSU offense was well balanced.
Venjie Wallis scored 11 points and was 4-of-7 from the field. Wallis also went 3-for-5 at the charity stripe and grabbed three rebounds in 27 minutes of duty.
Jayveous McKinnis added eight points and made his presence on the boards known with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Hunter Shelton came off the bench and provided the Tigers an offense boost. Shelton scored nine points, which were all three-pointers (3-of-4) and grabbed a pair of rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
Dontelius Ross added seven points and handed out three assists, while
Justin Johnson scored six points.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday and play host to Fisk at 7 p.m. at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
