The Jackson State men's basketball team returns to the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center for its Southwestern Athletic Conference home opener Saturday versus Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers also host Southern Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers opened SWAC play last weekend and went 1-1 to earn the important split.
Chris Howell scored four of his 17 points in overtime and Jackson State opened Southwestern Conference play with a 54-51 win at Alabama A&M. JSU narrowly dropped a 54-51 decision at Alabama State.

Venjie Wallis, and freshman
Jayveous McKinnis have proven to be a triple-threat at the mid-way point of the 2018-19 season. Howell, a 6-4 transfer from South Dakota State averages 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, which are both team highs.

Venjie Wallis is the leader in the backcourt. The 6-foot-6, 180-pound guard averages 10.9 points per game and is shooting 41.7 percent from the field.

Jayveous McKinnis averages 9.1 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. The Brandon, Mississippi native also shoots 66.1 percent from the floor and averages 26.8 minutes per game.

Jontrell Walker has been effective off the bench. The Aurora, Illinois native is averaging 9.2 points per game and hands out an average of 1.2 assists per game. Walker has scored 17 points on three different occasions (vs. Miles, vs. Fisk at Santa Clara).
