JACKSON – The Jackson State men's basketball team opens a two-game homestand Saturday versus Mississippi Valley State. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
Â
Howell and company power JSU past Grambling
Â
Led by senior
Chris Howell, JSU had one of its best offensive outings in the 65-63 win over Grambling State last Saturday. The Milwaukee native dropped a game-high 19 points hauled in 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Howell has totaled 163 rebounds an averages 8.6 boards per game, both of which lead the SWAC.
Â
Defense a calling card
Â
Defense has always been a point of emphasis for a
Wayne Brent-coached team and the 2018-19 Tigers are no different. JSU allows an average of 60.6 points per game, which is the lowest in the conference.
Â
Ross keeps the engine churning
Â
Senior and Jackson native
Dontelius Ross averages 5.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, but it's another stat that makes Ross so key for the Tigers. Ross averages 28.2 minutes per game and 34.3 minutes per game during SWAC play.
Â
"We need Dontelius and he is so important on both ends of the floor," Brent said. "He is a great defender and a great point guard for us. He does things that don't show up on the box score."
Â
McKinnis continues to grow
Â
Freshman
Jayveous McKinnis may be a freshman, but his play on the court is deceiving. The 6-foot-7 forward and Brandon, Mississippi native is averaging 8.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. McKinnis sports a 66.7 field goal percentage, which is a team-high.
