JACKSON – Jackson State picked up a pair of non-conference wins and defeated Belhaven 4-1 and 5-2 Tuesday evening at the JSU Softball Field.
Game 1 Jackson State 4, Belhaven 1
The Blazers and Tigers traded runs in the second and third innings before JSU added two runs in its part of the fourth inning. The Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth off a Belhaven miscue.
Freshman
Destyn Jones tossed a complete game and scattered four hits, allowed one run and walked a pair of batters and fanned a career-high six batters.
Kayla Owens batted 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI, while
Yasmin Melero and Jones each picked up a hit.
Game 2 Jackson State 5, Belhaven 2
Sierra Smith batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and runs scored to help power the Tigers to doubleheader sweep.
Smith doubled to left-center in the bottom of the fifth to push across a run and added her second RBI of the game in the sixth inning with a single to center field.
Kelsey Smith and
Madelyn Prukop each added an RBI.
Owens pitched a complete game. The sophomore allowed five hits, two runs and two walks and fanned four batters. She also forced the Blazers into 12 ground outs.
JSU returns to the diamond Friday and will meet Samford in the first day of the Samford Tournament. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
