JACKSON – Jackson State baseball pounded out 11 hits and rolled past rival Alcorn State 9-4 in the series opener Friday evening at Braddy Field.
The Tigers quickly jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead.
Junior
Chris Prentiss took advantage of an Alcorn error and
Raul Hernandez followed with an RBI single up the middle. Junior
Wesley Reyes pushed across the third run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
The Tigers added a run in the second inning and three in the third inning to open a 7-3 lead.
Senior
Dezmond Chumley added a two-RBI double to left field to extend the Tigers lead.
Sophomore
Nikelle Galatas earned the win. Galatas tossed six and a third and scattered six hits, allowed four runs and four walks and fanned six batters. Junior
Kevin Perez entered in relief and threw two and two-thirds and fanned three batters and allowed one hit.
Chandler Dillard finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run.
Chumley and Prentiss each picked up a stolen base.
JSU returns to the diamond Saturday for game two of the series versus Alcorn. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
