JACKSON – Jackson State dominated from start to finish in a 13-1 win over rival Alcorn State Sunday afternoon. The game was called in the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Tigers wasted no time to light up the scoreboard.
Dezmond Chumley started the scoring with an RBI single and
Tyler Culpepper then singled up the middle to score a pair of runs. Culpepper then attempted a to steal second base and was stuck in a pickle and Reyes sprinted to home plate to score before Culpepper was tagged out.
The Tigers continued their offensive surge in the second inning.
Equon Smith delivered a two RBI single to right field and
Raul Hernandez added an RBI double.
Rahman Williams finished the frame with an RBI single.
JSU extended its lead in the third inning.
Marshal Luiz added an RBI single and Smith came through with an RBI through the left side and Hernandez drilled an RBI triple to deep right field.
Chris Prentiss closed out the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
Garth Cahill tossed a complete-game gem. Cahill scattered two hits, allowed one run and two walks and fanned a pair of batters. Cahill also induced 15 ground outs.
Smith batted a 4-of-4 with three RBI and Williams went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
JSU returns to the diamond Wednesday at New Orleans at returns home Saturday versus Rust for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
