JACKSON – Four student-athletes reached double figures and Jackson State topped Alabama State 82-70 in an entertaining win on Senior Night.
With the win, JSU secured the No. 3 seed in the SWAC tournament and will host Alabama State this upcoming Tuesday for an 8 p.m. start.
On a night honoring the 2019 senior class, freshman
Jayveous McKinnis had his coming out party. The Brandon product dropped a career-high 19 points and was a perfect 9-of-9 from the field. McKinnis also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and recorded four blocks.
Aside from two early lead changes, the Tigers controlled the tempo of the game. JSU led by 23 points at the 10:13 mark in the second half.
Senior
Chris Howell added 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists.
Venjie Wallis made his living at the free-throw line and drained 10-of-11 attempts and scored 15. The junior also handed out three assists and recorded a pair of steals.
Senior
Jontrell Walker once again came off the bench and provided instant offense. The Aurora, Illinois native scored 12 points was 2-for-4 from beyond the arc.
The Tigers dominated in front of the rim and out-rebounded the Hornets 42-30. JSU also scored 40 points in the paint.
