JACKSON – Jackson State defeated Mississippi Valley State 4-3 in game one of a three game series Friday evening at the JSU Softball Complex.
The Lady Tigers (11-33, 6-10 SWAC) jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead. JSU loaded the bases and
Kayla Owens was hit by a pitch to push across the first run. Moments later,
Alexis Hansard singled through the right side to add a run.
Brooke Boechler was also hit by a pitch and the Lady Tigers scored once more.
Hansard delivered her second RBI of the game, this time in the third inning, with a triple down the right field line.
MVSU (10-30, 4-11 SWAC) countered with a pair of runs, but JSU snuffed the rally out in the seventh inning.
From the leadoff spot,
Sierra Smith batted 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Destyn Jones finished 1-for-2 and drew a walk and scored a pair of runs.
Kayla Owens tossed a complete game and scattered eight hits, allowed three runs and one walk and struck out two batters.
JSU and MVSU complete their series Saturday with a noon doubleheader. The 2019 Senior Class will be honored immediately following the completion of game one.
