Owens Tosses Gem in 1st Round Setback

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- No. 1 seed Texas Southern (West Division) narrowly defeated No. 4 Jackson State (Eastern Division) 1-0 in the first round of the 2019 SWAC Softball Tournament.

Kayla Owens proved why she's one of the most dominant pitchers in the conference. The sophomore tossed a complete game and scattered six hits, allowed one run and did not surrender a walk and fanned five batters.

Kaitlyn Elzie batted 2-for-3 and Madelyn Prukop and Sierra Smith each picked up a hit.

JSU was able to put runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.

The Lady Tigers turn their attention to Thursday morning and will match-up with Southern, the No. 4 seed out of the East Division. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. at Barbara Williams Softball Complex.

The Blue and White and Southern met earlier this season in Jackson, with JSU taking two out of three.
