Southern Miss Edges the Lady Tigers in Close Matchup Sunday Afternoon

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers took on the Southern Miss Lady Golden Eagles on Sunday afternoon in Hattiesburg, Miss. but came up just short in the contest, falling 2-0 in what was a tough Southern Miss opponent.

USM finished with thirteen shots in the game with five shots on goal, as both goals scored by the Golden Eagles happened after previously being deflected by another player and not challenged by the Tigers. "Both of their goals came off rebounds, so we have to be better about that" said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites, "I was very displeased with an on field tackle that I felt wasn't within the spirit of the match and the contest threatened to go off the rails at that point. Credit to both teams for not going there. Otherwise, our team spirit to play and compete when we've been up against it injury wise has been commendable, we are doing our best to see out the 90 minute period"

Jackson State has improved with each game throughout the season. Through the first four game, the Lady Tigers allowed a total of 26 goals. In the past three combined games against the likes of Southern Miss, McNeese State, and Northwestern State, the Tigers have managed to only surrender a total of five goals in that stretch, including holding USM to two goals this afternoon.

"We are having to adapt on the fly but that's futbol and life. The last three teams we've played including Southern Miss smashed us last year and this year the score line is a lot more respectable so I hope our players see the improvement as opposed to just the win-loss record. Credit to Southern Miss on the win, and credit to us for continuing to grind out matches from deep within the heart."

The team gets a week off from competition before returning home next Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field for a home matchup with North Alabama for a chance to continue the teams improvement and get into the win column.

"We have started to play for one another and that's when special things start to happen."
