Tigers Complete Sweep of Prairie View to finish 4-1 on the Weekend

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - The Jackson State volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of Prairie View A&M on Sunday afternoon to finish the weekend 4-1 at the SWAC Western Division Round-Up.

After going 3-1 in the first four games of the round-up, the Lady Tigers continued their momentum into the matchup with Prairie View opening up the first set of the afternoon with a 25-20 victory to take a 1-0 lead.

The Blue and White were led by Jylen Whitten who finished with six total kills in the set to give JSU the early advantage.

The Tigers improved to a 2-0 lead after the second set, winning 25-21 to position themselves for another three set sweep on the weekend. 

It took a little more effort in the third set of play as Prairie View was able to sustain a few points in the latter part of the set after trailing 19-14 at one point. PVAMU and Jackson State found themselves knotted up at 25-25, brining in the win by two points rule.

The Tigers were unable to be denied in the match, winning ultimately by a final score of 28-26 in set three and completing the sweep over the Host school for the entire round-up, Prairie View A&M.

With the win, the Tigers finished the weekend 4-1 and improving to 7-13 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Jylen Whitten was a handful in the matchup, ending her day with a team high 17 kills as well as three block and 10 digs.

Alana Washington had a stellar performance defensively as sent went for 21 digs, three assists, and one ace.

Other notable Tigers included Taila Gaines with seven blocks, Sapphire Simpson with 23 assists, and Nomura Kanile'a with nine kills. 

The Tigers return home on Oct. 8, for a home matchup with West Alabama. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
