JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State men's basketball team hosts Texas Southern (5-11) Saturday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. 
 
Last Time Out

The Tigers fell on the road to Southern, 56-50, in a close contest in SWAC play.

Roland Griffin led the Tigers with 18 points in 34 minutes of play. Griffin finished 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

Jayveous McKinnis had 11 points and a team best six rebounds. The Brandon (Miss.) native wasa perfect 5-of-5 from the field.

Jonas James tallied 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting while producing a Blue and White best three steals.

As a team, Jackson State went 20-of-52 (38.5 percent) from field goal territory. 

The Tigers outscored Southern in the paint, 34-28. JSU earned 17 points off of the bench.

Jackson State fell to 5-12 overall and 2-2 in the SWAC.

JSU guard, Tristan Jarrett, currently sits in first place in the SWAC with 19.6 points scored per game and No. 32 nationally. 

Jarrett also ranks No. 9 in the country in field goal attempts (301 attempts) and No. 35 in field goals made (272 made FG).

SWAC Player of the Week 

Roland Griffin, was named the SWAC player of the week on Tuesday as released by the conference office for his performances on the court last week for the Tigers.

Griffin finished with back-to-back double-doubles versus Alabama A&M and Alcorn State.

The Aurora, Ill. native tallied a total of 39 points, 22 rebounds, seven assists, one block and one steal for the week, including 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Alabama A&M and 27 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists in Saturdays win over Alcorn State.

Since returning to the Tigers lineup on Dec. 16 versus Southeastern Baptist College, Griffin has managed to score in double-digits for all eight games he has played in.

Griffin currently sits in second on the team with 16.6 points per game and in rebounds with 7.6 rpg.


Top 10 Opponents
 
Throughout the 2019-20 season, the Tigers have faced off against two top 10 teams: No. 6 Baylor and No. 9 Memphis each back in the month of December. The Tigers were competitive in against both teams but ultimately fell in each contest. 

Last Time Versus Southern (Feb. 18, 2019)

The last meeting between the Tigers of Texas Southern and JSU resulted in a TSU 77-65 victory at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
 
Chris Howell and Jontrell Walker each finished with tied with a team-high 16 points.
 
Venjie Wallis added 14 points and five rebounds. The 6-foot-7 combo guard also handed out a team-high five assists.
 
Jackson native Dontelius Ross had six points and four assists.
 
Lemmie Howard scored six points, grabbed four rebounds, two steals, one block, and one assist.
 
Brandon native Jayveous McKinnis pulled down seven rebounds, added four points to the board, and stole the ball twice.

Scouting Texas Southern

Texas Southern comes to Jackson ranked No. 3 in the current SWAC standings with Jackson State sitting in at No. 7 overall. 

TSU ranks 4th in the conference in scoring with 70.2 points per game but sit next to last in the conference in points allowed per game (79.3).

The Tigers are near the top of the conference in offensive rebounds at No. 2 in the league with 37.8 offensive rebounds per game. 

Texas Southern has three players averaging in double-digits in points per game, as they are led by Tyrik Armstrong with 14.8 points per game. 

John Walker III and Yahuza Rasas follow Armstrong with 12.0 and 10.0 PPG each, respectively. 

Armstrong leads TSU in assists per game (4.9 APG) and in steals (19 steals). 

Rasas nearly averages a double-double, leading TSU with a team best 9.7 rebounds per game to go along with his 10.0 ppg.

The Tigers are coached by head coach Johnny Jones who is in his second year as the head of the Tigers basketball program.
