JSU Softball Sweeps Friday Doubleheader With Kentucky State, Jarvis Christian

VICKSBURG, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon against Kentucky State and Jarvis Christian as the Lady Tigers took the first two games of a six-game weekend.

The Blue and White knocked off Kentucky State in game one at the Sports Force Park in Vicksburg (Miss.) 6-1, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, one in the fifth, and two more in the sixth inning. The lone run given up by JSU came in the top of the seventh inning as Kayla Owens was dominate from the beginning, working seven complete innings, allowing just two hit, one run, and no earned runs.

Owens fanned 11 total opposing hitters that came to the plate.

Ariana Cruz, Kelsey Smith, and Isis Taylor tallied two hits each, respectively, as Taylor led all Tigers with three runs batted in.

Sierra Smith was walked twice and came around to score twice for a team-best.

As a team, JSU collected nine hits while surrendering just two hits.

In game two, the Lady Tigers and Jarvis Christian kept a close pace with one another, yet a five spot in the bottom of the sixth propelled JSU to a 12-6 cushion heading into the seventh inning. JSU ultimately shut down JCU in the final inning to cap off the 12-6 victory, taking the sweep Friday.

It was game two Friday evening where the JSU bats really came to life as they had 14 hits by the time the final out was recorded.

Kaitlyn Elzie was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in.

Brooke Boechler and Monica Serrano each went 3-for-4 at the plate with Serrano leading JSU four runs batted in. Serrano also had three runs scored.

Boechler scored a run and produced two runs batted in.

Madelyn Prukop and Isis Taylor had two hits apiece while Prukop touched the plate three times.

The Lady Tigers went 2-0 on the afternoon and will look to remain undefeated for the weekend tomorrow with another doublerheader beginning at 11 a.m. versus Mile College and a 1:30 p.m. matchup against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
