JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State takes on Southern University Monday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

JSU guard, Tristan Jarrett, ranks first place in the SWAC with 17.7 points scored per game. Sophomore Jayveous McKinnis leads the SWAC in rebounds per game, bringing in 9.0 boards each contest while ranking first with 43 blocks.

Jonas James ranks No. 6 in the conference in total assists with 72 (3.1 APG).

Venjie Wallis pulls in at No. 9 overall on the steals list in the conference with 23 total steals.


Scouting Southern 
 
Southern comes to Jackson with an overall record of 9-14 and 6-4 in the SWAC ahead of Monday's contest. The Jaguars are comings off of a 66-62 loss to Grambling State Saturday afternoon after winning their previous six matchups.

The Jaguars rank fifth in the conference, just one spot ahead of JSU, in offensive scoring with an average of 68.7 points per game. Southern ranks one spot behind the Tigers in defensive points allowed, giving up 70.6 points per game to opposing teams.

Southerns top scorer, Ahsante Shivers ranks 23rd in the conference with 9.0 points scored per game while Damiree Andrews ranks 20th with 4.6 rebounds a game.

Southern is coached by head coach Sean Woods who is in his second season at the helm of the Jaguars program. He became the 13th head coach for the program on April 12, 2018. 

In year one, he led SU to a 7-24 overall record and 6-12 in SWAC play. He has compiled a 141-187 record in 10 seasons as a head coach including stops at SU, Morehead State (2012-16), and Mississippi Valley State (2008-12).

JACKSON, Miss. - The Tigers fell on the road to Southern, 56-50, in a close contest in SWAC play.

Roland Griffin led the Tigers with 18 points in 34 minutes of play. Griffin finished 6-of-10 from the free throw line.

Jayveous McKinnis had 11 points and a team best six rebounds. The Brandon (Miss.) native wasa perfect 5-of-5 from the field.

Jonas James tallied 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting while producing a Blue and White best three steals.

As a team, Jackson State went 20-of-52 (38.5 percent) from field goal territory. 

The Tigers outscored Southern in the paint, 34-28. JSU earned 17 points off of the bench.
