JACKSON, Miss. - Jackson State closed out the 2020 regular season on a four game win streak on their way to clinching the fourth seed for tomorrow's opening round of the SWAC tournament. As a result, home basketball returns to the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center where they play host to Alcorn State at 8 p.m.

Jackson State ranks 7th overall in the SWAC with 67.6 points per game while giving up only 68.8 points per game on defense to rank fourth in the conference.

JSU guard, Tristan Jarrett, ranks second in the
SWAC with an average of 17.4 points per game. Roland Griffin ranks third with 16.0 points scored per game and third in rebounding at 6.7 rebounds a game.

Jarrett ranks in the top 10 in the conference in steals (No. 8, 40 steals), field goal percentage (No. 7, 38.7 percent), and 3-point field goals made per game (No. 8, 1.6 per game).

Sophomore Jayveous McKinnis leads the SWAC in rebounds per game, bringing in 9.2 boards each contest while ranking first with 55 blocks.

Jonas James ranks No. 7 in the conference in total assists with 89 (3.1 APG).

Venjie Wallis pulls in at No. 5 overall on the steals list in the conference with 33 total steals.



Scouting Alcorn State
 
Alcorn is averaging 77.5 points per game while allowing 74.8 points per game to opponents. 

The Braves have four shooters averaging double-digits with Maurice Howard leading the way with 16.1 points per game. Howard also leads the Braves with 31 assists.

Other key scorers include Corey Tillery (13.5 ppg), Deshaw Andrews (11.8 ppg), and Troymain Crosby (11.4 ppg). Tillery has put together a team-high 18 steals.

Defensively, Kobe Wilson has been a force, leading the purple and gold in rebounds per game (6.1 rpg) and blocks (11 blocks).

The Braves are coached by head coach Montez Robinson who is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. He holds a current record of 59-79 overall and 40-34 in SWAC play.

Last Time vs. Alcorn State (February 8, 2020)

JACKSON, Miss. - The Tigers improved their win streak in conference play to four straight with Saturday night's 29-point victory over in-state rival Alcorn.

For the first time all season, Jackson State had two players score 20+ as Tristan Jarrett led with 24 points and Roland Griffin with 23 points. 

Jarrett also capped the night 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with three assists and four three boards, while Griffin grabbed seven boards, two assists and one steal. Griffin was 10-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. 

Jayveous McKinnis added a team best with 11 rebounds as well as five blocks. The sophomore from Brandon (Miss.) had eight points.

In nearly 11 minutes of action off the bench, Khalil Spencer provided eight points on 4-of-6 shooting with four rebounds.

Other notable Tigers included Venjie Wallis with six points, three steals and Jonas James with six points and five assists.

As a team, JSU was 30-of-56 (53.6%) shooting and 7-of-11 (63.6 %) from three-point territory. 

The Tigers also out rebounded Alcorn 39-34 and notched 40 points in the paint. JSU never trailed in the contest including a 12-0 start to the game and a 31 point lead in the final minute of play. 


Last Time vs. Alcorn State (January 11, 2020)
 
LORMAN, Miss. - Roland Griffin had a game-high 27 points in a 76-65 win over Alcorn State on Saturday evening in SWAC play.

Additionally, Griffin led Jackson State with 12 rebounds and had six assists. 

Venjie Wallis added 13 points, three 3-pointers, and three blocks

The Tigers leading scorer for the season, Tristan Jarrett, tallied 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting from the field. Jayveous McKinnis had eight points and three swats, while Jonas James had seven assists.

Jackson State finished 27-of-57 from the field as a team and 8-of-20 from three point land.

The Blue and White ended with 35 rebounds, 25 bench points and 36 points in the paint.

With the win, Jackson State improved to 5-11 overall and 2-1 in SWAC play. The Braves fell to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the SWAC.
