Lady Tigers Earn Second Straight SWAC Victory in a Row



JACKSON, Miss. -
The Jackson State Lady Tigers improved to 3-1 in SWAC play with a stellar 62-42 victory against Southern on Monday evening. 

In the first half of play, Jackson State jumped out to a quick 12-5 lead, before newcomer Jariyah Covington hit back to back three pointers to extend the Lady Tigers lead to 18-5.

Jackson State closed the half leading 30-13, holding an opponent to it's lowest point total all season long. At the break, Lisa Leslie Top Center watch list nominee Ameshya Williams totaled eight points, nine rebounds, and three blocked shots. 

Covington had eight points with a team best 2-of-2 from the three-point line at the break. Dayzsha Rogan had seven points and four rebounds midway through the contest.

The Lady Tigers held the Lady Jaguars to just five points in the third quarter to maintain a 48-18 lead heading into the final period.

Despite scoring just 18 points in the first 30 minutes of play, Southern tried to rally in the final 10-minutes, scoring 24 points compared to Jackson State's 14 points. JSU went on to win by a final score of 62-42

Williams finished with her sixth double-double of the season, tallying 13 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots. 

Rogan led all scorers with 17 points. She also had nine rebounds, and two steals. Covington finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and five assists. 

As a team, Jackson State finished 22-of-47 from the floor with 45 points in the paint, and 28 points off the bench. 

The Lady Tigers won its second SWAC game in a row, improving to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in conference. JSU returns to the court on Saturday, versus Prairie View A&M. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
