Jackson State won it's first conference matchup Monday night versus Alabama State by a final score of 60-44 on ESPNU. Jackson State was led by senior point guard,Â
Tristan Jarrett, who finished with 25-points on 8-of-16 scoring and four steals. In the first half of play, Jackson State opened up on a 7-1 in the first four minutes of play. The Hornets took their first lead of the night at the 2:34 mark left in the first half, 20-19. Jackson State closed the final two minutes of the half on an 8-0 run, taking a 27-20 lead into the break. Tristan Jarrett layup gave JSU a double-digit 33-22 lead. The Tigers never looked back, running away with the contest and securing it's first SWAC and overall victory on the season by a final score of 60-44. Outside of Jarrett, who finished with a season high 25 points on the night, the Tigers were given solid performances by Caianan McClelland, who had a season best 14-points on 5-of-7 shooting, andÂ
Jayveous McKinnis, seven points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots. McClelland also finished with a team-best 4-of-6 from three point territory.Â
Jonas James tallied eight points and four rebounds for the contest. As a team, Jackson State finished 20-of-51 (39.2 percent) from the field. Jackson State won it's first game of the season and improves to 1-0 in SWAC play.
LAST OUTING VERSUS GRAMBLING STATEÂ
Jackson State nearly completed the 14 point comeback but fell just short by a final score of 63-61 to Grambling Saturday evening. The Tigers were led
Venjie Wallis who had an impressive outing with 15 points, three steals, and five rebounds. Wallis was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.Â
Roland Griffin with 14 points and seven rebounds. Griffin took a team high 19 shots, knocking down five shots. In the first half of the contest, Grambling led by as many as 14 points with four minutes left on the clock until the break. Jackson State played solid defense and made clutch shots to work the deficit to a manageable score, before taking a 50-48 lead with aÂ
Miles Daniels three pointer. JSU eventually extended it's own lead to 57-50 with under five minutes left but Grambling went on a 13-4 run over the final remaining minutes with the help of seven made free throws, all by Grambling's Ivy Smith Jr. GSU went on to defeat the Blue and White by a final of 63-61, as Wallis' final second three point shot nearly missed going in for the game winner. With the loss, JSU falls to 10-17 overall and 7-7 in SWAC play.Â
